Reading the play and Initial responses

Read-Through

Upon first reading the play I noticed that it embarks on the themes of sexual politics, feminist views and terrorism.

The only female in the play, manages to uphold her status and maintain her reign of power over the men. She turns each question asked of her, into a question back at them, which they then reply to, leaving them to answer to her. This carries on the theme of male and female authority in politics.

Character A in my opinion plays as character C's conscience, A constantly dips in and out of a lucid infatuation with 'Blondie' which to me could represent the confused way in which the male mind works. Thinking with your mind or your genitals.

In the beginning of the play Blondie connotes a very sexual evasive character, one whom uses her femininity to her advantage. Blondie constantly smiles at C as she knows he is easy to manipulate, showing the power divide in both genders. It also states that Blondie dyed her hair blonde, this could denote a hidden personality or identity, even a mask which she would like to hide behind as she carries out these terrorist attacks.

I also read that Blondie is in handcuffs and being interrogated by two officers, this means she has the lower status yet somehow manages to have more power in the play.

Blondie described her new look as "soft", "sensual", "maternal" and "trusted", we know since she is sitting there being questioned by officers that she completely juxtaposes this image, she foreshadows darker events to be revealed later on.

I also noticed that Blondie used her sexuality as a weapon to dis-arm the men she was trying to break down, by making them feel at ease, "We wouldn't tell anyone. It'd be our little secret".

"Theatre Uncut isn't just a performance, it's an idea: that theatre can be immediately responsive to world events, engender discussion and effect change. Founded in response to public service cuts, it suggests that theatre has a part to play in the protest movements that are gathering pace across the world in response to economic downturn and events in Syria. The lead time between a play being written and actually being staged is often more than a year; Theatre Uncut, by contrast, is theatre's rapid response unit." - The Guardian

  2. This is a great initial response to the play. You have expressed your thoughts very maturely and eloquently in this summary.
